I hope you are doing wonderful and are finding your way through whatever life has thrown your way. Just remember to take it day-by-day and do the best you can. And as you work through life’s situations, I want to share with you some of the things that have helped me look at everything differently and to truly live a more positive and fulfilled life. These “things” are what I call fundamentals. Each fundamental has been a great tool for me to work through ‘any’ challenging situation in life, and they’ve helped many, many of my clients as well. So I’ve decided to write about each of the 10 fundamentals as the next 10 postings. I hope these fundamentals help you as much as they’ve helped me and others.
Here’s the first fundamental I want to share. And please know that these are not in any particular order. They are all priority and just as important as the next. You will determine how and when you want to work with each and what’s most important to you.
Take What Feels Right To You!
What exactly does that mean? Well, it means just what it says. Whatever you do in life, whatever decisions you make, whatever challenge you face, whatever someone may say or suggest to you, whatever it may be… please be sure to take what feels right to you. I know I’m always talking about my beautiful connection with my sister who passed away in 1987 and obviously I’m teaching about this, writing about it and sharing my thoughts and experiences about it, but even though this is what I have found so powerful in my life, and it’s certainly something I believe we are all meant to experience, that doesn’t mean it feels right for everyone. I always tell my clients, or anyone who contacts me, to take what feels right to them. I’m not here to change someone’s mind; I’m here to share my experiences and to provide what I’ve learned over the years that has been so helpful to me. Whatever you do with this information is perfect for you. Truly.
You are in control of your own life! You are the only person that can determine what feels right to you; no one else can. Your heart (and your internal guidance) will guide you. Your heart knows only Truth. It’s important to understand that when an experience occurs in your life, your heart reacts or responds immediately with a feeling of Truth; this is what we call a “knowing.” Very quickly (and I’m talking within a second or faster), your mind gets involved to plant doubt, worry, and/or fears. In order for you to “take what feels right to you,” it’s important to understand how your body (your heart; your internal guidance and wisdom) speaks to you. Following your heart or your internal guidance is all about going within; understanding “you” for who you truly are; loving you for “you”; and having faith in the Truth you already know. As you become familiar with how your body reacts and speaks to you, you will be in the best position to follow what feels right to you.
I have a couple of tips and exercises to provide as it relates to this fundamental. I hope you will take the time to understand yourself a bit better because by doing so, you will indeed improve your life for the better. I know this firsthand.
1. First, get out of your own way! And what I mean by this is, stop listening to your crazy mind. You’ve heard me say this a million times already – our minds go crazy on us all day long, everyday. It’s non-stop and I know you get what I’m saying here. Turn your mind off so you can get out of your own way and begin recognzing, feeling and understanding what the rest of your body is trying to tell you. We are our own crystal ball into the future, if only we would stop and listen to what’s in our heart (not our mind)! Please learn to use the tools already at your disposal – your heart, your internal wisdom and guidance.
2. So, how do you do this? In order to go within and to understand how your body and your heart (your internal guidance) responds to you, try the following:
- Settle down your mind and body by taking a few deep, cleansing breaths;
- Go to a quiet place where you won’t have any noise or interruption;
- Make a statement out loud. This could be as simple as stating your name just to practice how your body responds to true statements versus false statements; (“My name is Debbie Heneghan,” ”My name is Barbara Jones”)
- Pay attention to the very first feeling of what your heart (or body) sends out after you complete your thought.
- If you feel good (sort of like an opening or a lightness in your heart area), what you stated is true or is the right decision.
- If you don’t have a good feeling (sort of like a closing or heaviness in your heart area), then you’ll know what you stated is not true or is not the right decision.
Please know that it takes some practice so if you do the exercise and you aren’t sure what you felt, try it again. If you still don’t feel anything then walk away and try it again later. Don’t get upset if it takes you a while to “feel” how your body responds because it will indeed happen. Also, you may feel reactions in your heart area or in your stomach area — everyone is different. No matter what, your body will respond.
3. Always remember that you already know the Truth of any situation in your life. You know deep within yourself and your heart. Be open to listening to your body just as you’ve always done with your mind.
4. Don’t allow anyone or anything (like FEAR) to influence you on the path you choose in life or the decisions you make. Go within and allow your “heart” to guide you and take what feels right to you.
5. Remember what FEAR stands for: False Emotions Appearing Real.
I leave you with this. I could choose to ignore what feels right to me (i.e. what my heart is telling me), but that just doesn’t bring a smile to my face or a warmth to my being. So why would I ever want to ignore what feels right to me? Let me tell you why (since we all do this at some point or another) – because sometimes I’m so afraid, I just can’t help it. Sometimes I get so buried in fear and doubts that I can’t see or think clearly any longer. Sometimes I’m so worried about what the outcome may be, or how someone may respond or react, or what it will be like to do something different. Or sometimes it’s just because I’m putting others first and it’s for their happiness that I sacrifice my own. These are all great answers …. if you want to stay in a place of misery, fear, worry and doubt. I’ve done that enough in my life, as we all have, but I’m making a conscious effort to do the absolute best I can to follow my heart and to follow what feels right to me (not what feels right to everyone else for me)!! So I’m asking you to do the same for yourself; the rewards are remarkable. Oh and by the way, the fears, the worries, the doubts and all of the craziness that keeps us from following our heart, all go away when you do indeed follow what feels right to you! That’s right – it all goes away because it was never real in the first place. FEAR is not real! WORRIES are not real! DOUBTS are not real! They are all made up by our crazy minds. So shut your mind up, go within and watch your life unfold in a beautiful way!!
